What is Exception Handling?
Exception handling is the process of identifying, reviewing, and resolving items that fall outside the normal flow of a finance process. In finance, an exception could be an unmatched transaction, a reconciliation difference, a failed posting, missing support, or an overdue approval.
These issues need to be dealt with quickly before they affect reporting or delay the close. Without a clear exception handling process, problems can go unnoticed, be handled inconsistently, or sit unresolved for too long. That creates extra manual work and makes finance processes harder to control.
For SAP finance teams, exception handling works best when issues are visible inside the system and can be assigned, tracked, and resolved properly. When teams rely on email chains, spreadsheets, or offline follow-up, it becomes harder to see what is still open and who is responsible. A better process improves visibility, supports control, and helps finance teams keep work moving.
Exception handling is the way finance teams deal with issues before those issues turn into bigger reporting or control problems.
