AI in finance attracts a lot of broad claims. BEST’s current AI work is specific: it reads finance documents that arrive in different formats and converts written-out dates into the format SAP requires.
These are input tasks. AI doesn’t carry out reconciliation or open-item clearing by itself. It returns information to the relevant BEST process, while the surrounding SAP process keeps the reconciliation and clearing controls in place.
For teams considering finance automation inside SAP, the useful question is simple: which task needs interpretation, and which controls must stay within the finance process?
What BEST uses AI for today
| Capability | Where it applies | What AI does | What the SAP process does |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI document reading | The BEST Vendor Recons module | Extracts vendor statement information where formats vary | Uses the information to support vendor reconciliation in SAP |
| AI document reading | The BEST Customer Clearing module | Captures customer payment advice and remittance information | Supports customer matching, open-item clearing and exception handling in SAP |
| AI date cracking | Classic BEST solutions running in SAP S/4HANA | Interprets free-format narrative dates and converts them to YYYYMMDD |

Reading finance documents where layouts vary
BEST uses ChronoScan and language-model APIs as an alternative to manually mapping and training every document layout. The language-model APIs can read incoming PDF vendor statements, vendor invoices and customer payment advices, then return structured information to the relevant BEST process.
Template-based mapping still has a place. When a document layout stays the same, someone can map and train it once. BEST can then process repeat documents using fixed extraction rules and predictable costs. If the layout changes, the mapping may need more work.
AI document reading suits documents with varied or changing layouts. It reduces the amount of upfront mapping and re-mapping needed when a supplier or customer uses a new format. The cost can vary with usage, so it still needs testing, security review, careful prompts and clear rules for when someone should review a result.
In the BEST Vendor Recons module, AI document reading extracts information from vendor statements where formats vary. That information supports vendor reconciliation in SAP.
In the BEST Customer Clearing module, it captures payment advice and remittance information. It supports customer matching, open-item clearing and exception handling in SAP.
The result is less offline document handling, better visibility and reconciliation work that remains close to the source SAP data. For a fuller explanation of the document-reading approach, see AI in SAP reconciliation automation.
Date cracking for narrative dates
BEST’s AI date cracking handles written-out dates that existing programme logic can’t reliably interpret. For example, it can turn “31st of January 2026” into 20260131, the YYYYMMDD format required by SAP.
Common date styles, such as 01/31/26 and 31.01.2026, already go through existing programme logic. They don’t need an AI call or use AI tokens.
When BEST needs AI for a narrative date, the process is narrow:
- BEST code sends the date to a selected external language-model endpoint through a direct HTTP call.
- The model interprets and normalises the date.
- BEST validates the returned value before the SAP process uses it.
This gives classic BEST solutions inside SAP S/4HANA a focused AI capability without first moving the product to SAP BTP. It also keeps model use limited to the cases that need it.
Each customer can select its preferred language-model provider for date cracking. The customer contracts directly with that provider and remains responsible for provider billing and data-privacy arrangements.
Where SAP BTP fits
The BEST Vendor Recons module is BTP-native. BEST rebuilt it as a cloud-native SAP add-on using Cloud ABAP on SAP BTP, rather than running it in the S/4HANA database layer. That gives it the shortest current path within BEST to SAP AI services.
The module uses RAP-based services. Released business services, authorisation and application logic give BEST controlled connections for AI use cases. Standard BTP platform bindings can connect the module to SAP AI services, while BEST remains responsible for its business rules and access control.
SAP’s ABAP environment overview describes how Cloud ABAP supports cloud applications and extensions using released objects and APIs.
This BTP-native position applies to the BEST Vendor Recons module. Classic BEST solutions still operate inside SAP S/4HANA. Their current date-cracking capability uses a direct external language-model call for one narrow task, so it doesn’t depend on SAP BTP.
A defined role for AI in finance processes
BEST already uses AI to read documents and interpret narrative dates. In both cases, AI deals with a specific input. The relevant BEST process and SAP process continue to provide the reconciliation or clearing controls.
The BEST Vendor Recons module has a BTP-native foundation and controlled connection points for SAP AI services. The other current AI capabilities support specific tasks inside existing BEST processes. This doesn’t mean every SAP AI service is available in every BEST product today.

Frequently asked questions
What AI functionality is available in BEST today?
BEST currently uses AI for document reading and date cracking. Document reading returns structured information from finance documents to the relevant BEST process. Date cracking interprets written-out dates and converts them into the SAP-required format.
Does every BEST product use SAP BTP?
No. The BEST Vendor Recons module is BTP-native. Classic BEST solutions run inside SAP S/4HANA. Their current date-cracking capability makes a direct call to an external language-model endpoint for the narrow task of interpreting a date.
Does AI carry out reconciliation or open-item clearing?
No. AI handles focused input tasks. In the BEST Vendor Recons module, extracted vendor statement information supports vendor reconciliation. In the BEST Customer Clearing module, captured payment and remittance information supports customer matching, open-item clearing and exception handling. SAP continues to provide the reconciliation and clearing controls.
Who is responsible for the external language model used for date cracking?
For date cracking, each customer selects its language-model provider and contracts directly with that provider. The customer remains responsible for provider billing and data-privacy arrangements. BEST validates the returned date before the SAP process uses it.
